Hello! How are you? I'm Natàlia, and today I'm here to persuade you to read the book: "Gallant" by V.E. Schwab. "Gallant" is a standalone work of gothic fantasy where all the action occurs within a mansion filled with ghosts, an exact copy of itself existing in a shadow world. Sounds intriguing, right?
Before we begin, I've attached the link to a YouTube video here for those who prefer not to read:
The story of "Gallant" introduces us to Olivia Prior, a mute girl who has lost her parents and resides in the dreary orphanage called Merilance. Her only link to her mother is a diary full of secrets that unravel throughout the plot. Olivia has a special gift: the ability to see spirits and establish a strange form of communication with them. These spirits have been her only company for much of her childhood, as the girls in the orphanage are far from friendly. The author's description of the spirits is noteworthy, painting them as ghosts worn by the passage of time.
Olivia's life takes an unexpected turn when she receives a letter from her uncle, Arthur Prior, inviting her to live in his mansion, Gallant. But this mansion is no ordinary place; it is a mysterious home with only three inhabitants. Her cousin, in particular, is not kind to her and does not welcome her presence in the mansion. However, Olivia longs for a family and a place to belong, so she does not easily succumb to hostility.
In this mansion, Olivia can also see the ghosts that inhabit it, but she is accustomed to their presence and no longer fears them. They have been a part of her life since she was a child, and she considers them companions. As she explores the confines of the mansion, the mysteries start to fit together like a puzzle, until there comes a time when Olivia decides to cross a threshold that changes everything.
The plot of "Gallant" is skilfully woven, with no dull moments, and each element presented by the author is revealed at just the right time. All the questions that arise throughout the novel find answers at the end, leaving the reader satisfied.
In conclusion, I believe this gothic novel is excellent, offering an intriguing plot that completely captivates you. If you enjoy mysterious mansions, twisted secrets, and crave surprises, you should definitely read this book.
Let me know in the comments if you've read it and what you thought, or if you intend to.
Sending a big hug! Until next time!
